Promethean - "Willing to take risks in order to create new things or do things in new ways, like Prometheus, the ancient Greek demi-god”

In the summer of 2025, I visited the workshop of artist Nina Casson-McGarva. As soon as I saw Nina’s stunning glass sculptures and learned about her method and techniques, I knew I had to create a project centred on her practice. Rather than photographing the finished artworks, I decided to focus on the incredible process that goes into creating them. From sculpting moulds, to kiln firing, to twisting and shaping the still-malleable glass, the journey is fraught with potential disaster. If the chemical reactions, physical procedures and environmental conditions are not exactly right, the piece will crack and be unsalvageable. Even under these conditions, Nina remains committed to creative exploration, pushing the limits of this process ever further. The jagged shards of every broken experiment become the foundations for the next beautiful, alchemical success.

The glass is transformed by light; echoing the celestial, mythical fire that Prometheus liberated from the gods and brought to our world.
